The iconic fashion designer has passed away aged 85 from a short illness. His talent bestrode the world of fashion like a colossus, shaping the identity and output of Chanel, Fendi and his eponymous label. Instantly recognisable by his trademark white pony tail and dark glasses, his almost caricature-like image has never disguised the sheer talent, vision and force of personality that defined him.
His hilarious/acerbic wit was famous: "Sweatpants are a sign of defeat. You lost control of your life so you bought some sweatpants". But a more accurate description of his creative approach could be summed up by his own phrase "continuing to embrace the present and invent the future’.
